Learner of the Year

Meet Portia Monaheng, learner the year (2010)

Portia Monaheng grew up in Vosloorus where she witnessed emotional and physical abuse. While attending Erasmus Monareng Secondary School, however, she found solace and support in her teacher, Meurial Magaya. The impact of the relationship between teacher and learner encouraged Portia to achieve high marks in Physical Science. Portia’s marks in the subject increased from 40% in 2009 to 69% in 2010. Meurial taught Portia in both Grade 11 and 12 and Portia has subsequently passed matric with university entrance. Portia is the first in her family to achieve such an accolade.

TEACH South Africa helps bridge the gap between teacher and learner, working with all school stakeholders, in an effort to change the lives of those from historically disadvantaged townships and improve the quality of education available.

Meurial said that she believes she’s made a significant difference in the lives of her learners, forming what is best described as a life-long bond between teacher and learner in the process.
