by TEACH South AfricaChantelle holds an honours degree in English and Applied Linguistics from the University of Cape Town and has been teaching English to Grade 11 learners at Katlehong High School since January 2010.
Of the experience so far, Chantelle says that “dedication, hard work and a sense of fearlessness” are the qualities one must have in order to succeed in the classroom, especially as a teacher.
“My biggest learning so far has been ... to adjust and manage expectations of myself and of other people.”
“Once you get into a situation and are challenged, you must learn to adapt accordingly if you hope to achieve anything tangible.”
The journey so far has already made a lasting impression on Chantelle, one she believes will continue to motivate her until the end of her two-year contract.
“It’s been life-changing. This experience has changed the way I look at life.”
On a personal level, Chantelle says she has learned to be “patient and more accepting of other people and their backgrounds”.
Chantelle is actively involved in extramural activities. Speaking about legacy and what she hopes to impart to learners by the end of her contract, Chantelle remarks:
“I would like to see learners achieving great things and using their backgrounds as a tool, not a hindrance.”
